Contribute to the future of unmanned aviation!

The DLR Institute of Flight Guidance develops and validates advanced management functions for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) and Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS). In this area of research, concepts to enable the safe integration into civil airspace and the timely processing of mission data for dynamic mission adaptations are being scientifically investigated. The basis for the realization of this research work is the prototypical DLR Ground Control Station U-FLY, which allows complex UAS missions (for individual UAS and UAS swarms) to be planned, controlled, monitored and validated.

At the heart of our research various missions ranging from small UAS (e.g. quadcopters) to MALE / HALE (Medium / High Altitude Long Endurance) systems are being examined. The U-FLY is integrated into DLR's Air Traffic Validation Center. Interactions of the UAS with other airspace users and air traffic control can be investigated in a realistic environment using a simulated airspace. In flight tests with different unmanned platforms, the developed concepts can be tested and evaluated. For this challenging activity, our interdisciplinary team seeks reinforcement in software development and modeling.

In the research group on “Unmanned Aircraft Systems” you will work in a team to design, implement, and test software modules for various UAS and their missions. The work will be integrated into research and development projects. The work will include software development of the U-FLY ground control station and the implementation of test scenarios into the simulation environment. The content is co-organized in national and international projects with the aviation industry and other research institutions. If necessary, the position can also be carried out in part-time (while studying).
