Outline

The aim of this project is to investigate new molecules for use as biosensors for detection and imaging of disease biomarkers. The project will develop the synthesis of new luminescent molecules (including organics, metal complexes) and use advanced spectroscopic, biophysical and bioimaging methods to fully investigate the potential of these new systems.

The project will involve chemical synthesis and characterisation, using a breadth of analytical and spectroscopic techniques including NMR, UV-vis., EPR, time-resolved luminescence, and confocal fluorescence microscopy. There is extensive scope for developing new materials and evolving their applications, including cell culture work, bioassays and bioimaging. As the project is embedded in an interdisciplinary training and research program, you will be expected to work closely with the other PhD students in your cohort who will be based in the School of Pharmacy and in the School of Engineering. Further collaboration will be with researchers from a variety of different disciplines including the School of Physics and Astronomy, public health bodies and industry.

The project will involve:

  • the design, synthesis and characterisation of new luminescent molecules
  • advanced studies of the interactions of the new molecules with biomolecules
  • evaluation of the diagnostic and bioimaging capability

What is funded

The studentship includes fees, stipend and RTSG. The stipend and fees are at the UKRI rate (for 2020/21 is £15,285; £4,407 respectively).

Students must meet the eligibility criteria, outlined in the terms and conditions on the UKRI website.

Please note that 30% of our fully-funded studentships are available to international applicants, and there is no requirement for the student to make up the fee difference

Eligibility

Candidates should hold or expect to gain a first class degree or a good 2.1 and/or a Master’s level qualification (or their equivalent) in chemistry with project experience in synthetic organic and inorganic chemistry.  

Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in the English language (IELTS 6.5 or equivalent).
