Offer Description
The Biosensors lab (http://biosensorslab.biology.uoc.gr/), headed by Prof. Electra Gizeli, invites applications from a scientist for one position to work on the EU HORIZON-CL6-2023-ZEROPOLLUTION-01 project entitled “On-site biological sensing for aquatic pollutants and biohazards”, Acronym: AquaBioSens.
Job Description: “Development of microalgal whole-cell biosensors and validation of environmental RNA assays”
Development of microalgal whole-cell biosensors and validation of environmental RNA assays
Specifically, the successful applicant will mainly evaluate the use of microalgae as whole cell biosensors. This will include the characterization of cellular functions that can act as sensing elements. The RA will also assist in the validation of previously developed molecular assays for water quality testing around shellfish farms and bathing waters, including toxic marine and freshwater microalgae. The candidate will work closely with international project partners and potentially have opportunities to participate in field testing in Greece, UK and Ireland.
About the lab and new position: The successful applicant will join a multidisciplinary group consisting of biologists, chemists, engineers, bio-physicists and material scientists which focuses on the development of diagnostic/biosensing platforms for environmental and healthcare applications. They will contribute to scientific excellence and innovation-driven research, contribute towards the broad dissemination of scientific results and develop skills related to presentations, report-writing and scientific papers writing.
About the project:
AquaBioSens aims to decentralize aquatic hazard and pollution measurement tools, aligned with the EU Missions to “Restore the oceans and waters” and achieve a “clean environment with zero pollution by 2030”. The project will develop portable devices to measure emerging contaminants, microbial biohazards, and heavy metals. The devices will employ cutting-edge techniques, including immunoassays for organic contaminants, RNA quantification for harmful microalgae and bacteria, and genetically modified microalgal whole cell biosensors. The project will demonstrate and validate the devices in polluted coastal and freshwater environments in the UK, Ireland, and Greece, with the support of local government inspection agencies. Results will be widely disseminated to maximize the commercial potential of the technologies.
