Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?
Join the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB), Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden, a leading academic research centre that prioritizes high-impact, long-term projects.
CMB researchers carry out groundbreaking research across different areas of cell and molecular biology and regularly publish their results in top-ranked journals. The department is found in Biomedicum, an interdisciplinary research center designed to concentrate much of the experimental research conducted at Karolinska Institutet Campus Solna.
Description of the subject area
We are looking for a professor in cell and molecular biology focusing on skin biology research. The skin is a vital barrier that protects internal tissues from pathogens, chemicals, and physical injuries while also regulating body temperature and enabling sensory perception. For the past two decades, skin has also been a prime organ for investigating and advancing stem cell biology, including analysis of how tissue-resident stem cells adapt and respond to environmental cues and injury. The complexity of skin cell types and functions has been illuminated using single-cell technologies, and this development in basic science has direct relevance for various health issues including skin disease, aging, and cancer. To promote pioneering research in skin biology, expertise in advanced molecular and cellular analyses of the skin is crucial. Additionally, the ability to bridge skin biology from animal models to human tissues is essential. Such research is vital for developing innovative technologies and targeted treatments for skin-related diseases, which is becoming increasingly significant in modern medicine
Your mission
You are an internationally leading expert in cell and molecular biology and will lead groundbreaking research in the field of skin biology. The work involves teaching and supervision from undergraduate to postgraduate levels, and contribution to administrative duties within the department. You will become a group leader with delegated responsibility in various areas, including work environment. You are also expected to collaborate locally, nationally, and internationally, and to carry out outreach activities. You must also continuously acquire funding through external grants.
Eligibility requirements

It is particularly meritorious that you have demonstrated
- lead groundbreaking research within the field of cell and molecular biology, with special focus on molecular skin biology, and stem cell dynamics.
- lead internationally recognized research activities in cellular and molecular characterization of skin.
- successfully lead national and international research collaborations that address fundamental biological- and disease-related questions.
After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
