Offer Description
The Laboratory of Instrumentation and Experimental Particle Physics (LIP) is opening a selection tender for one Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (BPD) for research activities in the scientific subject of Computational Social Sciences, in the framework of the project “FARE, Fake News and Real People”, Grant Agreement 853566, funded by the European Research Council (ERC).
The recruited candidates will integrate a multidisciplinary and diverse research team in a collegial and collaborative environment.
The candidate should have a PhD degree in computer science, network science, informatics, mathematics, physics, or a related quantitative field, and should have experience with Modelling and Statistical Analysis. Expertise with computational analysis tools such as MATLAB, Mathematica or Python is required. Preference will be given to candidates that have previously worked on complex systems, complex networks, or social network analytics.
Workplan:
Recent events have raised serious concerns about the influence of the so-called fake news. FARE will enrich current efforts, which mostly confront fake news spreading from an applied perspective, by offering a theoretical framework that allows us to make testable predictions. FARE argues that sharing of fake news is a deviation from pure rationality and aims at understanding:
1. What are the role(s) that cognitive biases play in fake news susceptibility and spread?
2. What are the role(s) that network features play in fake news dynamics?
3. How do cognitive biases and network features interact to impact on fake news spread?
4. How can we tackle such questions in an ethical and society-focused manner?
The project will be developed in six main tasks:
1. Fake news Extraction and Classification;
2. Behavioural Framework and Cohort Creation;
3. Social Networks Dataset Development and Analytics;
4. Theoretical Framework Development and Testing;
5. New Tools for the Ethical Handling of Big Data;
6. Expert Panels and Results Dissemination.
This is an interdisciplinary project and the selected candidate will be participating in all tasks of this project (with a particular emphasis in Tasks 3 and 4), together with several members of the group, and is expected to be part of other research activities, such as journal club discussions and group meetings.
Legislation: A fellowship contract will be established according to the “Regulations for Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and Technology” (https://dre.pt/application/conteudo/127238533) and to the Status of Scientific Research Fellow (Law nº 40/2004, August 18th, and its successive amendments).
Duration: The fellowship has a duration of 12 months, with a foreseen starting date on October 2023. The fellowship may eventually be renewed, until the maximum foreseen in the project and according to the terms of the FCT regulations.
The research project will be conducted at LIP under the scientific supervision of Joana Gonçalves de Sá.

Evaluation of the CV of the candidates, namely their educational background and past experience.
Each member of the panel will value the criteria for each candidate, taking into account the requirements of the duties to be performed, the adequacy of previous experience, his/her relationship to the relevant areas and sub-areas.
The selection will consider the applicant's Curriculum Vitae (60%) and their motivation letter (40%).
High-ranking candidates might be called for an interview, and the final decision will be based on the interview score alone.
After applying the selection criteria, the panel will prepare an ordered list of the approved candidates and their corresponding classification. In case none of the candidates can demonstrate suitable skills or background, the panel will not select any candidate.
