1 (one) Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship (BIPD)

 

1 Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship(s) (BIPD) is(are) open at the FCiências.ID – Associação para a Investigação e Desenvolvimento de Ciências, for the project/R&D institution “Philosophical Investigation of Applications of Science in Mathematics”, “2022.06784.PTDC”, funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P./MCTES through national funds (PIDDAC) under the programme  R&D Projects In All Scientific Domains, Exploratory Research Projects (PeX) - 2022, under the following conditions:

 

1.                   Scientific Area: Philosophy of Physics or Philosophy of Mathematics

 

2.                   Requirements for admission:

a) To hold a PhD degree obtained in the three years prior to the date of submission of the application for the fellowship;

b) Post-doctoral research is carried out in a different host entity from the one where the research work that led to the attribution of PhD degree was carried out.

 

3.                   Additional optional skills and qualifications: Ideal candidates are philosophers of physics or mathematics with a strong background in physics and mathematics. Knowledge of the applicability problem of mathematics in the empirical sciences and debates on the status of symmetries and conservation laws is not mandatory but highly desired.

 

4.                   Contracting requirements: Presentation of the academic qualifications and/or diplomas.  

 

5.                   Work plan:  The successful candidate will work in Lisbon within the PHI ASM project (for a description of the project see: https://phi-asm.rd.ciencias.ulisboa.pt/). The main goal of his/her research, which will be carried out in collaboration with the other members of the project, will be to provide an answer to the following question: Do conservation laws hold in virtue of mathematics alone? In order to answer this question, the successful candidate will revise the available literature in philosophy of physics that addresses the purported mathematical or physical status of conservation laws. Moreover, he/she will complement this literature by using works that are not philosophical but come from mathematics and physics. Work on closely related topics and issues would also be welcome.

The successful candidate is expected to produce (at least) one article in a top-quality peer-reviewed international journal in philosophy of science. Moreover, he/she is expected to give (at least) one presentation in an international conference.

 

6.                   Legislation framework: Research Fellowship Holder Statute, in accordance with Law 40/2004, of 18 August, in its current version and the FCT Regulation for Research Studentships and Fellowships, in its current version  (Reg. 950/2019 published in DR on 16th  December: https://dre.pt/application/file/a/127230968,  or at the FCT website: https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/regulamento.phtml.pt), and FCiências.ID Fellowship Regulation, as approved on 12th May 2020 (available at Regulamento de Bolsas de Investigação Científica da FCiências.ID).

 

7.                   Place of work: The work will be developed at the Centro de Filosofia das Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (CFCUL), Campo Grande, Lisboa, Portugal under the scientific supervision of Professor Daniele Molinini.

 

8.                   Fellowship duration: This position is initially opened for 6 months due to start in September 2023. The fellowship contract may be potentially renewed for 4 months.

 

9.                   Monthly allowance: The fellowship amounts to € 1 741,00, according to table values of the fellowships awarded directly by the FCT, IP. The fellowship holder will have a personal accident insurance and can ensure the right to social security through adherence to the voluntary social insurance scheme, if not covered by any other social protection scheme, pursuant to Código dos Regimes Contributivos do Sistema Previdencial de Segurança Social.

The fellowship will be paid monthly by bank transfer.

The fellowship may also include: (1) Single Travel Allowance and (1) Single Accommodation Allowance .

 

10.                Evaluation and selection process: Candidates will be assessed by

The Selection Committee will evaluate the applications received by assigning to each of them a preliminary score which is the sum of three individual scores:

(a) CV (45 %);

(b) Scientific production in research areas related to the PHI ASM project (35%); 

(c) Motivation letter (20%).

After the preliminary evaluation, the best five candidates will be contacted for an interview. The interview will take place electronically via the Teams platform. The final evaluation will be obtained considering the sum of the criteria a), b) and c) (70%) and the interview (30%).

Applicants whose application is scored with a final classification of less than 40 points are not eligible for granting a fellowship.

 

11.                Selection Committee: Daniele Molinini (President of the jury), Matteo Morganti and Davide Rizza (effective members), Bruno Jacinto and Michele Ginammi (alternate members).

 

12.                Publication/notification of results: All the candidates will be notified by e-mail, sent by the call holder, with the selection meeting minutes enclosed.

 

13.                Deadlines: This call for applications is open from 02/05/2023 to 29/05/2023 .

16.                Time limits for the appeal procedure: In case of negative decision, the candidates have 10 business days, after the date of announcement of the results of the candidates evaluation, to pronounce their disagreement in accordance with the Código do Procedimento Administrativo. Appeals against the final decision may be submitted to the Administration Board of FCiências.ID (fciencias.id@fciencias-id.pt) within 15 business days after the notification date

 

 

Note 1: The documents that prove the entitlement of the academic qualifications and diplomas, or the proof of registration in the academic degree or diploma requested on the call, can be dismissed during the application period and replaced by a declaration on their honour from the applicant. Their delivery is mandatory for the fellowship contractualization.
